Comparison of Spectral Slopes of Magnetohydrodynamic and Hydrodynamic Turbulence and Measurements of Alignment Effects

چکیده
We performed a series of high-resolution (up to 1024) direct numerical simulations of hydro and MHD turbulence. Our simulations correspond to the ”strong” MHD turbulence regime that cannot be treated perturbatively. We found that for simulations with normal viscosity the slopes for energy spectra of MHD are similar to ones in hydro, although slightly more shallower. However, for simulations with hyper viscosity the slopes were very different, for instance, the slopes for hydro simulations showed pronounced and well-defined bottleneck effect, while the MHD slopes were relatively much less affected. We believe that this is indicative of MHD strong turbulence being less local than Kolmogorov turbulence. This calls for revision of MHD strong turbulence models that assume local “as-in-hydro case” cascading. Non-locality of MHD turbulence casts doubt on numerical determination of the slopes with currently available (512–1024) numerical resolutions, including simulations with normal viscosity. We also measure various so-called alignment effects and discuss their influence on the turbulent cascade. Subject headings: MHD – turbulence – ISM: kinematics and dynamics

Investigation of the Bed and Structural Slopes on Bed Shear Stress and Flow Characteristics around an Impermeable Groyne
In this paper, effects of the cross shore and groyne wall slopes on flow parameters around an impermeable groyne were considered using a three-dimensional numerical CFD model (i.e., FLUENT). The k-ε turbulence model was used to evaluate the Reynolds stresses. The model was first applied to a vertical groyne on a flat bed and the model results were compared with the relevant experimental data. T...
متن کاملNonlinear transverse cascade and two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic subcritical turbulence in plane shear flows.
We find and investigate via numerical simulations self-sustained two-dimensional turbulence in a magnetohydrodynamic flow with a maximally simple configuration: plane, noninflectional (with a constant shear of velocity), and threaded by a parallel uniform background magnetic field. This flow is spectrally stable, so the turbulence is subcritical by nature and hence it can be energetically suppo...
متن کاملMagnetohydrodynamic dissipation range spectra for isotropic viscosity and resistivity
Dissipation range spectra for incompressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulence are derived for isotropic viscosity and resistivity . The spectra are obtained from heuristic closures of spectral transfer correlations for cases with Pm= / 1, where Pm is the magnetic Prandtl number. Familiar inertial range power laws are modified by exponential factors that dominate spectral falloff in the dissipatio...
متن کاملNumerical Investigation of Island Effects on Depth Averaged Fluctuating Flow in the Persian Gulf
In the present paper simulation of tidal currents on three-dimensional geometry of the Persian Gulf is performed by the solution of the depth averaged hydrodynamics equations. The numerical solution was applied on two types of discritized simulation domain (Persian Gulf); with and without major islands. The hydrodynamic model utilized in this work is formed by equations of continuity and motion...
متن کاملLocal Hydrodynamic Stability of Accretion Disks
We employ a variety of numerical simulations in the local shearing box system to investigate in greater depth the local hydrodynamic stability of Keplerian differential rotation. In particular we explore the relationship of Keplerian shear to the nonlinear instabilities known to exist in simple Cartesian shear. The Coriolis force is the source of linear stabilization in differential rotation. W...
